At Latinos Progresando’s inaugural One Community Breakfast in June, we had the distinct pleasure of announcing the two recipients of the 2017 Dr. Angela Perez Miller Scholarship: Guadalupe Rendon-Guzman and Maybeth Gomez. Recipients of this scholarship undergo a rigorous selection process, overseen by Latinos Progresando’s Associate Board, with thorough applications and in-person interviews. Recipients are ultimately chosen on the basis of academic excellence, financial need, and demonstrated commitment to community service.
Our first 2017 scholarship recipient is Guadalupe Rendon-Guzman, who currently attends Northeastern Illinois University in the College of Education. When Guadalupe was just five years old, her family immigrated from Mexico to Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood, where she spent much of her childhood confronting language barriers, along with the financial hurdles associated with being undocumented.
Guadalupe embraced her early challenges, however, succeeding as a college student while finding time to work with community organizations like Gear Up Alliance. The Dr. Angela Perez Miller Scholarship will assist Guadalupe as she enters the final stages of her degree and completes her unpaid student teaching hours. The Latinos Progresando family is proud to support Guadalupe’s education and her ultimate goal of becoming an ESL bilingual teacher.
Our second 2017 scholarship recipient is Maybeth Gomez, who also attends Northeastern Illinois University. Like Guadalupe, Maybeth was confronted with early obstacles, immigrating from Mexico to Chicago with her aunt and uncle at just two years old. Despite an unstable home and little support of her academic pursuits, Maybeth has excelled as a student and community leader.
While she pursues a degree in Social Work, Maybeth makes time to mentor boys and girls as a part of a youth soccer league, with the ultimate goal of obtaining a PhD and opening a non-profit to support low-income youth through music lessons and gardening. The Dr. Angela Perez Miller Scholarship will help Maybeth finish her degree without having to take off semesters to pay for tuition. We are honored to support Maybeth’s education and efforts to make the community a better place.
