Every year the Chicago Foundation for Women recognizes four women, throughout the City of Chicago with their “Impact Awards”―given to women who go above and beyond and whose work has made a significant impact on the lives of other women and girls.
After 15 years of working in the for-profit sector, specializing in customer service training and management, Marcy Gonzalez took a considerable pay cut and joined Latinos Progresando (LP) as a caseworker in 2006.
With her extensive management experience, relentless work ethic and ability to build strong, trusting relationships with clients, Marcy earned accreditation by the Board of Immigration Appeals, and quickly developed into the Director position.
As Director, Marcy has proven time and again her ability to bring out the best in other people: developing a team of 6 women—3 of them former LP clients, to administer the program’s day-to-day operations, and doubling LP’s service level, reaching nearly 4,000 families with high-quality, affordable legal services last year.
Marcy also represents undocumented victims of domestic violence in self-petitioning for legal permanent residency through LP’s VAWA Project. With adjusted status, women are able to gain economic independence from their abusers, and the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Marcy’s commitment to her clients is nothing short of amazing: at her insistence, LP remains the only provider on Chicago’s southwest side offering VAWA immigration benefits to women free of charge. Marcy never declines an invitation to give educational presentations about VAWA and the immigration system in organizations, schools, and women’s shelters to ensure that as many women as possible have resources to make the best decisions for themselves and their families.
