What if you were given the opportunity to change your life in just four hours? That was the scenario facing Laura Sanchez just eight years ago when she made the decision to fly from Michoacan, Mexico to Chicago with the dream of starting a business.
Knowing no one, and having to learn the hard way what “No Soliciting” meant as she went door-to-door to build her company, Laura shares the lessons that today, have allowed her to build an IT firm so successful that she counts among her clients the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Mexico Tourism Board of Chicago, and the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Because of the help of people she says had “nothing to win” by supporting her, she feels an obligation to give back. As someone who has created jobs and works to educate other people about building their business, Laura also feels an obligation to stand up to those who are giving the wrong impression about immigrants. “We are assets to this country,” she says, “and I am as proud to be Mexican as I am to be American.”
