In light of the rapidly changing environment for immigrants in our country, Latinos Progresando will be hosting the One Community Breakfast to support the increased demand for family-based immigration legal services.
The Breakfast program will feature a keynote presentation from Executive Director of the ACLU of Illinois, Colleen Connell, whose presentation will address post-inauguration issues affecting Chicago’s immigrant community. It will also include both the presentation of this year’s Progresando Award recipients, honoring their important work in our community, as well as the recognition of the 2017 recipients of Latinos Progresando’s Dr. Angela Perez Miller Scholarship for immigrant and Latino students.
2017 Progresando Award Honorees
Community Partner Award
Organization of Latinos at Exelon (OLE)
The Community Partner Progresando Award is meant to honor outstanding examples of organizations who place the community first. Through their volunteer initiatives, their support of educational opportunities for underserved youth, and their firm commitment to diversity in the workplace, the Organization of Latinos at Exelon (OLE) demonstrates the power of community leadership at a time when it is acutely needed. It is with great enthusiasm that we present this year’s Community Partner Progresando Award to such a deserving group.
The Organization of Latinos at Exelon is an Employee Resource Group within the Exelon family of companies that organizes networking opportunities and community-focused programming by utilizing the talent and resources of its Latino employees.
Community Leader Award
The Community Leader Progresando Award is meant to honor outstanding examples of individuals who commit themselves to bettering the community. Through her unwavering commitment to accessible immigration legal services, and her regular volunteering at neighborhood organizations like Latinos Progresando, Caroline Orzac Shoenberger sets an incredible standard for community leadership in Chicago. The Latinos Progresando family is thrilled to present this year’s Community Leader Progresando Award to such a deserving person.
Caroline is the Supervising Attorney of the Immigration Project at the Chicago Legal Clinic, Inc., with an additional 25 years of experience in Chicago government service. She is also a Tenured Faculty member in the Business Department at Harold Washington College and has served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Chicago-Kent College of Law.
The Dr. Angela Perez Miller Scholars
Latinos Progresando created the Dr. Angela Perez Miller Scholarship Fund to promote educational attainment in the Latino and immigrant community, to assist Latino and immigrant youth in covering the cost of obtaining a college education, and, ultimately, to increase the number of Latino and immigrant college graduates.
Scholarships are offered to graduating high school seniors admitted to attend college or current college students enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education. Scholarship recipients are chosen based on academic standing, financial need, and commitment to community service.
At the 2016 Tomorrow’s Heroes Today event, Latinos Progresando awarded scholarships to Hector F. Farias of Farragut Career Academy and Magdalena L. Gonzalez-Hernandez of the Illinois Institute of Technology.
