The Violence Against Women Act allows victims of domestic violence to qualify for immigration and other public benefits that provide them with the tools to live safer, healthier lives.
VAWA, the Violence Against Women Act of 1994, provides a way for victims of domestic violence to self-petition for immigration benefits, which helps end dependency on abusers for legal permanent residency or citizenship status.
Not only women, but any wife, husband, child, or parent of a citizen or legal permanent resident abuser may be eligible to apply for VAWA benefits. At Latinos Progresando, we offer free consultations to assess the eligibility of potential VAWA applicants. After the consultation, we help eligible clients file for benefits and find related services, such as divorce, custody representation, public benefits, and food and shelter needs. In cases where no remedies are available under VAWA, we can refer clients to organizations that can help with their needs or offer a second analysis of their situation.
If you or someone you know might be eligible for VAWA benefits, please do not hesitate to come in for a free and confidential consultation, or to contact our legal services staff. All services rendered through the VAWA program are available free of charge.
In addition to providing free services to eligible clients, we also work to reach out to potential VAWA applicants. The number of VAWA applicants nationwide has slowly increased in recent years, but many eligible people do not yet know about the law. In response to this situation, we offer information sessions about the VAWA program in partnership with numerous shelters and domestic violence programs in the community. Our community partners, like Sarah’s Inn and Rainbow House, have staff from Latinos Progresando train their domestic violence volunteers on immigration and domestic violence issues.
