Every year, Latinos Progresando brings together friends, colleagues and supporters for our annual Tomorrow’s Heroes Today event, celebrating the organization’s accomplishments and the successes of Chicago’s Latino community.
It is at the Tomorrow’s Heroes Today event where Latinos Progresando also awards promising young students with its Dr. Angela Perez-Miller Scholarship, and recognizes one individual and one business through the Progresando Awards for their significant impact—culturally, economically and socially.
2016 Progresando Award Honorees
Community Partner Award
Marquette Bank’s continued support of Latinos Progresando’s work and the company’s commitment and dedication to providing high-quality, accessible financial and banking services to our community makes it deserving of this year’s Community Partner Progresando Award.
Community Leader Award
The Community Leader Progresando Award will be presented to Alice Cottingham for her ongoing support of Latinos Progresando’s work in addition to all of the social justice work she has been able to accomplish as an individual in Chicago’s philanthropic and nonprofit sector.
The Dr. Angela Perez Miller Scholars
LP created the Dr. Angela Perez Miller Scholarship Fund to promote educational attainment in the Latino and immigrant community, assist Latino and immigrant youth in covering the cost of obtaining a college education, and, ultimately, increase the number of Latino and immigrant college graduates. At the 2015 Tomorrow’s Heroes Today, Latinos Progresando awarded scholarships to Daisy Najera, Maria de la Luz Rios, and Viridiana Lopez Pedraza.
Daisy applied for the Dr. Angela Perez Miller Scholarship Fund as a senior at Eric Solorio Academy High School entering North Park University to pursue a degree in Biology on the pre-med track. Daisy wants to use her education to become a pediatric surgeon and is a dedicated advocate for children with disabilities. Daisy came to the US with her mother in 2002 and was accepted to the Lighthouse Cohort Program at North Park University.
Maria received the Dr. Angela Perez Miller Scholarship as a freshman at Richard J. Daley College majoring in Human Services. As a survivor of domestic violence and a single mother, Maria is passionate about helping victims of domestic violence find resources and counseling. Maria has a background in International Business but returned to school in order to become a Licensed Professional Counselor. She currently volunteers at Mujeres Latinas En Acción, completing intakes and connecting survivors of domestic violence to resources within their community.
Viridiana is a senior at Chicago State University (CSU) majoring in Biochemistry on the pre-health track. Despite the challenges of being a single mother and an immigrant student, she excelled academically, achieving a 4.0 GPA. Viridiana has been recognized on the dean’s list for her academic achievement and is a CSU Honors College Presidential Ambassador. As an immigrant herself, Viridiana founded the Chicago State University DREAMers Club, which provides resources and support for undocumented students at her university.
Scholarships are offered to graduating high school seniors admitted to attend college or current college students enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education. Scholarship recipients are chosen based on academic standing, financial need and commitment to community service.
